CLASSROOM 1 MARKETING OVERVIEW

Conventional Web marketers have given up on banner/popup ads. One major web guru said, "THE #1 REASON FOR LOW TRAFFIC AND TERRIBLE CONVERSION RATES? Banner/popup ads!" Some MLM lead generators dispute this since they pull 1000’s of new leads with hot banner/popups that take home business seekers to a “capture form” (a form that captures name, addresses and phone). They can be one of the best bargains on the Internet today! Today's much lower ad prices are giving many businesses an affordable and effective way to spread the word online."

Retinal studies have shown that Web surfers actually avoid banner/popups. Yes, their eyes look away! Numbers of Clicks (Click Throughs) have plummeted to under half-of-a-percent. Here is another hot tip: Banner/popups have an average Conversion Rate of 0.5%. But those who use "in-context" TEXT links (i.e., text links that are part of the content of the Web page) average over 3.5%! This new tricks means that you have a link to a POP-UP in your web page writing.

Why have banner/popups sunk? Banner/popups that are cheesy hurt your credibility. Because visitors simply arrive feeling "pitched" rather than informed when they click. They arrive on your in a resisting mindset, rather than with an open, ready-to-buy attitude. Remember that example where you sent 100 visitors per day to a merchant and 1% bought? If you rely on flipping up some cheesy, poorly designed banner/popups, it will be more like 10 visitors per day and NO one buys!

Banner/popup ad rates have dropped from $20 to reach 1,000 people a year ago to just five or six dollars today so they can be a great bargain. Even though the “trendy luster” of the Web has passed, there are still millions of interested prospects to be found online. This could be the best time ever for small and medium-sized businesses to stock up on banner/popup ads.

The Internet Advertising Bureau approved standards for new, larger banner/popups. Pop-Ups and Pop Unders are so common they are becoming irritation to some people. The new "wide skyscraper" size has already appeared on top sites and is three times larger than what we are used to. Advertisers hope the larger size will get reader attention, converting more sales. Experts warn not to get caught up in “flash” banner/popup technology. Over the next few years, as more and more people get fast broadband Internet connections, we will see "rich media" banner/popups that look more like television.

NEW ACTION AND SIZES INCREASE HITS FROM BANNER/POPUPS

Although banner/popups can be effective in creating message association and brand awareness, the new "large rectangle" (360x300) and "skyscraper" (160x600) online ad sizes have been found to be 3 to 6 times more effective than standard banner/popups (468x60).
Implementing these new sizes isn't always as easy, since not all sites support the newer sizes, but it appears that the extra effort is worth it. Additionally, other multimedia advertising technologies such as audio, video and flash appear to enhance these ads' effectiveness.

Positioning, such as interstitials (a pop-up that appears as a new Web page is loading), pop-up ads (which appear over a loaded page), Pop Unders (which appear when you close a page) and ads that are simply on a page. They all vary in effectiveness, with interstitials and pop ups being found to boost awareness nearly 100 percent. Once again they are an irritant, but one that produces results!

Obviously, which size, what supporting multimedia technologies, if any, and what position your next ad is displayed in is dependent upon what message and what audience you're targeting. But the bottom line is that the extra effort and cost in moving beyond the plain banner/popup may be more cost effective in the long run. In order to pull any kind of response your banner/popup must offer quality and clarity. Test – Test – Test!

CLASSROOM 2 POINTS

Usually refers to an online image displayed at the top of a Web page, and replaces the Heading. Most common is 468 x 60 pixels, and a hyperlink image (GIF format normally) found in the margin or other advertising space on a Web page. Some banner/popups are animated; some are static and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

BANNER/POPUP AND POP UP POINTS

  • Design should require reader to take action. i.e. "Click Now!"
  • Create interest and emotion with words. i.e. FREE! Special Offer, Buy, Save, Profit, Rush.
  • State product / service benefits not features, or if you do take the feature to the benefit element.
  • Animated banner/popups pull better response than static ads (Under 12k). Use these to step readers through other successive panels. The most important message should be going in the first panel, and details in the second panel.
  • Keep the photos low resolution so they load quickly. Try to reduce the standard 256 web-safe colors to just 16 for an even "lighter" banner/popup.
  • To eliminate complaints tailor a special web page to correspond with your banner/popup/popup. Make sure you give plenty of information, contact, how to, costs.
Too many sites are leaving these points out of their sales page, making this one of the chief causes of lagging banner/popup response.

<< ACU Comments >> Before you commit big money to your banner/popup ad campaign, test your ad or ads with a 30-day trial run. Most banner/popup networks provide reliable statistics on how many people have seen your ad (impressions) and how many clicked on it to go to your site (click-throughs). You can also check the server logs your web host provides to see where hits are coming from. If you simply MUST use banner/popups, save them for the products that you don't really feel GREAT about recommending. That way, you don't hurt your credibility -- after all, it's "only advertising."

Save your "in-context" TEXT links (to a popup or web page) for opportunities that deliver value to the reader.

Do-It-Yourself:
Creating a good banner/popup for you takes time and effort. The payoff is a unique banner/popup with personality and pride. Why not give it a try? Just remember -- it has to invite surfers, and it has to communicate on its own!

Your banner/popup must be a CAPTURE PAGE. This is the common name for what banners/popups do actually do! They are to capture prospects for you! Yours has to be the best, to win their hearts and minds! Here are the secret tips:

1. AIDA
(A) - Attention - A banner/popup should not be able to escape someone's attention.
(I) - Interest - It has to attract interest to your capture page.
(D) - Desire - The reader has to desire viewing your capture page.
(A) - Action - He has to click your banner/popup.

Graphic Tools - You need graphics software to create your banner/popup/capture page. A complete list is below!

2. Target group:
Before you begin to create your banner/popup (capture page), you need to study your target group. What do you offer and for whom would it interest? These are simple questions with often some simple answers. But you should think of them while working on banner/popup-advertising or making any other promotions. If I had a site about sports in general, I could not create a banner/popup dealing with soccer only, because only a small part of my target group is interested in soccer.

3. Headlines - Text - Content:
Hot contents on the popup or banner/popup are imperative e.g. special tips on saving taxes or free software. With your banner/popup (Pop-Ups) you want to launch your whole homepage or capture page. Many experiences have already shown that only one or two items displayed on a banner/popup get much more ad-clicks than banner/popups with lots of information. The viewer just recognizes a banner/popup and does not read anything because it is too busy. So you just need to promote the newest or main aspects of your page.

4. Bright Colors:
Research has shown that blue, green and yellow work best, while white, red, and black are less effective. To get someone's attention, you should use bright and loud colors. Colors affect the eye differently. Using bright colors can help attract a user's eye, contributing to higher response rates. Another possibility of a color combination is the one you have chosen on your website. So the layout will depend on your homepage and this will sometimes get a higher recognizing effect.

5. Elements:
It has been proved that graphical elements like buttons and forms are not even a bit decorative, but can raise the click-through-rate. Pay attention on the choice of elements you added into your banner/popup/capture page! Do not use too many different ones. It often seems to be overcrowded and will not be mentioned. You can take some graphics from your own homepage, which reflect the promoted themes. Remember: Even text-messages without any images can be very nice and effective.

6. Use Cryptic Messages:
No good headline? Cryptic ad banner/popup can help involve a user in the message. Cryptic messages typically increase click-through by 18%. What did that ad say? What did that mean? Because the "sponsor" of the message is not revealed, cryptic messages can be very intriguing. But there is a downside. Branding is forfeited on the ad. This may not be an issue if branding is not your main objective.

7. Call to Action:
As in traditional direct response, telling consumers what to do helps raise response rates. Click here! Enter Here! Submit Now! Simple phrases such as "Click Here", "Visit Now" and "Enter Here" tend to improve response rates by 15%. These phrases should be strategically placed in the ad, preferably on the right side. This is where the eye will be drawn."

8. Animated Banner/Popup:
Every text or image must be able to be realized at least two times! It is also proved that animated banner/popup will highly attract the attention. But especially in this case, you should limit the size of animated banner/popup; maximum 7 Kbytes! On timing each of the inserted images you need to regard the display-times. A hint for you: Read the shown text loudly and clear two times. If the next image is shown earlier, you have to adjust the time-settings.
